  • Wesley was born in 1802 in Bridgewater, Burke County, North Carolina.

John was granted 200 acres of land just north of the Catawba River, Burke County, North Carolina, on 7 July 1778. Then in 1780, John was called to defend his country against the British, leaving his infant son and wife behind. Drafted to service for three months in Burke County, North Carolina, John became a Private in the Militiamen in Captain Mordecai Clarke’s mounted rifleman. They marched to Charlotte, North Carolina, joined the forces of General William Lee Davidson, and participated in resisting the entry of Lord Cornwallis into Charlotte in late September 1780. They posted for six weeks in Charlotte and were joined by General Morgan, who spent a few days with them. The armies then parted and later marched with Capitan Clarke to the vicinity of Cowpens, South Carolina. By the time John arrived at the Cowpens, his tour of duty had expired, so he was discharged and did not participate in the 17 January 1781 Battle at Cowpens.

In the Summer of 1781, John was called back to duty for three months under Capitan John Conley (his brother-in-law) and was sent to the Old Fort at the head of the Catawba River in Burk County. When the war ended, John returned home to Rebecca, their family, and the farm. In 1802 their last child, Wesley, was born, giving him a total of eleven children - one daughter and ten sons. John then became a preacher at Obeth Methodist Church in Burke County.

On 15 July 1844, John was allowed a pension at the age of 89 years. John’s pension application was executed while a resident of Burke County and permitted him a pension at the rate of $20.00 Per Annum. His pension application number S8556, is recorded under North Carolina State Pension #32204, Book E., Vol. 6-1/2, page 56.

John died on 26 January 1847 at Bridgewater, Burke County, North Carolina, and is buried at Obeth Cemetery, Burke County, North Carolina.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
