Peter Gerhart was born 1 September 1744 in Zweibrucken, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. He arrived in Philadelphia on 16 October 1768 on board the Ship Betsey, with his brother Daniel. Captain S. Haak from Rotterdam, Last from Cowes.
Peter Married Salome Lauer about 1770 in Heidelberg Township, Berks County. It is said that she is the daughter of Hans Michael Lauer and Anna Barbara nee Frey and that she was born 24 December 1751 at Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster County, PA. They had 8 children, their names being, Mathias, Henry, Peter, Daniel, John, Martin, Catharina and Sebastian.
In 1770, right after Peter married Salome Lauer he purchased the land on both side of Spring Creek from Christian Lauer. The original owner of this land was Hans Michael Lauer, who had died in September of 1769. This property stayed in the Gerhart/Lauer Family until 1925, when John Gerhart sold it to Charles Fisher.
4 June 1777, Peter took the Oath of Allegiance in Heidelberg Township, Berks County, Book D, Volume 1, Page 33.
1777 thru 1783, He was listed in the Berks County Militia, 4th Battalion; Colonel Nicholas Lotz, Lt. Colonel Joseph Hiester, Heidelberg 6th Company, Captain Conrad Eckert. Peter Gerhart, Page 311, listed under 2nd class.
Berks County, 1781 he is listed as paying the Federal Supply Tax in Heidelberg Township.
In 1783, Heidelberg Township, Berks County tax List, he owned 170 acres, 3 Horses, 4 cows and 5 sheep and paid a tax of 3.19.8 pounds.
On 9 August 1808, Peter writes and signs his last will. It is proved on 1 March 1813, all the children are named in his will.
Peter dies on 22 January 1813 and his Wife, Salome dies 26 May 1821, both are buried at St. John’s “Hain’s” Reformed Church Cemetery, Lower Heidelberg Township, Berks County, Pa.
