Author: David John Gunther

Daniel Gay was born about 1749 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut.

As a farmer, he relocated from Connecticut to Southeast Dutchess County, New York, between 1770 and 1774. He was one of the original settlers of Putnam County.

Daniel married Sarah Kelly sometime between 1770-1774, probably in Southeast Putnam County, New York. Their known children were:

  • Abner was born on 2 June 1775 and married Susannah Terry.
  • Hannah was born on 27 January 1777 and married Ebenezer Ellis.
  • Sarah was born in 1780.
  • Cyrus was born in 1783 and married Sophia [surname unproven].
  • Daniel was born in about 1784 and married Phoebe Shaw.
  • Josiah was born in 1786.
  • Ebenezer was born on 25 June 1789 and married Clarissa Wetherett.
  • Philip was born in 1791.
  • Clarissa was born in 1792 and married Elisha Travis.

In 1775, Daniel was listed on the Southeast, Putnam County, New York Tax list as owning real estate and personal property. During this time, it was imminent that 13 rebelling American Colonies were going to war with Great Britain.

Daniel defended his nation and was a patriot serving in the American Revolution as a Private in the Dutchess County, New York Militia 6th Regiment under the command of Colonel Roswell Hopkins and Captain Azor Barnum. Usually, the militias would fight in times of local invasion, and after the threat passed, they would return to their farms.

He was enumerated in the 1790 Fredericktown, Dutchess County, New York Census. This town's name was changed to Southeast, so in the 1800 and 1810 Census, Daniel appeared in the Southeast, Putnam County census.

The Patriot died on 20 June 1812, age 63, in Southeast, Putnam County, New York. His final resting place is the Ancient Burying ground known as Ellis Cemetery, located on the east side of Husted Road, Southeast, New York.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
