Joshua Gates, the son of Caleb and Mary (Forbes) Gates, was born in Preston, Connecticut on 3 November 1728. He married on 15 May 1755 in Preston to Anna Branch.
He served for three days from the town of Preston during the Lexington Alarm in April 1775 and later served as Ensign in Capt. Lee Lay’s Company, Col. Samuel McLellan’s Regiment. The Regiment, which was raised for one year’s service in March 1778, was in Tyler’s Brigade under General Sullivan. The Regiment served in Rhode Island under Sullivan in August and September 1778.

Joshua Gates died in Preston, Connecticut in 1778.
