Genealogy Notations
Problems have been discovered with at least one previously verified application.
Patriot's wife is not proven; other lineage information is accepted.
The wife is rendered on previous applications as “Elizabeth X,” “Patience West,” and “Patience Ida West.”
The authority for the “Patience West” identification appears to be Ethel Updike, Gary Family of England to Virginia to South Carolina, p 19. The reviewing Genealogist in 2016 did not agree with Updike’s conclusion and, since we had conflicting information on the previous applications, those applications were marked with a code.

Biography by Find-a-Grave volunteer Donna Brummett, #37211640 and reproduced here with permission.
Charles Gary was born in 1733 in Garysville, Virginia, to John M Gary Sr and Rebecca Sterling. The family migrated from Virginia to South Carolina. In 1755, Charles and two of his brothers signed a petition as residents of Saluda River Section for redress against the Indians. Charles married Patience West, around 1763. Their children were Thomas West, John, William, Mary, Sarah Jones, and West Gary. Charles received a royal land grant, dated 1765, for 150 acres in Berkley County, South Carolina, on a fork between Broad and Saluda Rivers near Bush Creek. In 1766, he was granted 200 acres in Craven County, South Carolina, on Saluda River Creek, adjacent Rev. Samuel Newman. Charles was a Patriot in the Revolution, having served under Gen Francis Marion. He was paid, in 1781, for provisions supplied the Militia and, in 1785, was paid 9 pounds, 16 shillings, and 7 pence for provisions for the Continental Army. Charles wrote his will in 1806 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He died on 18 July 1808, in Bush River, South Carolina, and was buried at Bush River Church Cemetery. His will was probated the next day. Executors were sons Thomas and West, witnessed by Charles and Joshua Jones and Absalom Gary. West conveyed two acres of his father's land to the Bush River Baptist Church on 13 August 1808.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
