Author: Michael Mankin
William Gaines, was born 3 Mar 1705 in King & Queen County, Virginia, the son of Richard and Catherin Madison Gaines. He married Isabella Pendleton in 1730, in Culpepper, Virginia.

He had Colonial Militia Service and Patriotic Service for the Revolutionary War. From 'Slaughter Records,' William Gaines fought Indians in 1753. Military Rosters in Henning Statute, Vol. I, page 23, he was a foot soldier in the Culpeper Militia 1758. In Augusta County Files, Vol 2, Pages 171, 174 & 175, William Gaines in 1776 had military service under ‘Proclamation of 1736,’ entries for 1,500 acres of land. From 1781 Richmond Archives, William Gaines was authorized to aid in the purchase of food, ammunition & war supplies."" & from page 406, 'The Gaines Family of Colonial Virginia and Their Descendants,' by Calvin W. Sutherd.

He died in 1796, at the age of 91 in Culpepper, Virginia.
