Johann Nicholas Fry was born on 30 October 1746 in Germany, the son of Jacob Fry.

He married Catherine Schnecter on 20 August 1767. After Catherine’s death, he married a second time to Anna Margretha Lutz, the daughter of Jacob Lutz and Juliana Johz, on 7 December 1773. He would marry a third time to Anna Margaret Ansel, the daughter of Leonard Ansel.

He was the father of at least twenty-two children:

During the American Revolution, he served as a Private of the German Regiment of the Maryland Militia in Frederick County, Maryland in 1776-78. He was part of the company of Captain Henry Fister between 1776-1778. He participated in the American retreat at the Battle of White Plains, New York on 28 October 1776.

Johann was with General Washington at the Crossing of the Delaware, the Battle of Trenton, New Jersey on 26 December 1776. Additionally, he was at the Battle of Princeton, New Jersey on 3 January 1777, and wintered in Morristown, New Jersey from 6 January 1777 to 28 May 1777. He was in the Battle of Brandywine, Germantown, and Whitemarsh. He wintered at Camp at Valley Forge between 19 December 1777 and 19 June 1778.

He died on 23 March 1840 in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia.
