Much of what is known about Daniel Frazier is from his great-granddaughter, Mrs. Mary Frazier Messenger, who supplied information to editors of the book Commemorative Biographical Record of Hartford, Vol. 2. Mary Frazier Messenger was born in 1852, nearly 50 years after her great-grandfather’s death. One might reasonably assume the information she provided was passed down in the family as an oral tradition. Her information includes his date and place of birth, as well as stories regarding his life before the family moved to Granby, Connecticut.

Daniel Frazier Sr. was born on 22 January 1742 in Brooklyn, New York, where he resided into adulthood. Daniel was the son of Thomas Frazier, who moved his family from Brooklyn, New York, to Hartford County, Connecticut. Daniel worked as a seaman aboard the ship Vulture, under Captain John Gunn, for several years, engaged in the West India trade.

Daniel enlisted in 1776 and served in Captain Benjamin Hutchens Company of the Eighteenth Connecticut Militia Regiment commanded by Colonel Jonathan Pettibone, Esq. He arrived in New York on 18 August 1776 and was discharged on 6 September 1776, a term of one month and two days.

He married Abigail Haladay on 16 December 1760. She was born on 15 April 1743 and died on 9 May 1825. Their known children are:

  • Alexander was born on 19 August 1761.
  • Thomas was born on 2 April 1763.
  • Daniel was born on 10 May 1765.
  • Abigail was born on 23 July 1767.
  • Jared was born on 4 September 1769.
  • David was born on 6 January 1771.
  • Elizabeth was born on 26 January 1773.
  • Samuel was born on 27 September 1777.
  • Mary “Polly” was born on 4 June 1781.
  • Ruth was born on 30 June 1784.

Daniel engaged in agriculture once he moved to Connecticut and had a farm of about 150 acres. He appears as the head of household in the 1790 U.S. Census at Granby, Hartford, Connecticut.

He died on 23 October 1803 in Granby, Connecticut, and was buried in East Hartland cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
