George volunteered in Mecklenburg (Cabarrus County) on 01 Feb 1780 and served as a private in the North Carolina militia. He received a pension (R544) for his service in 1832.
In his October 1832 pension application, George described his war service:
“I was a volunteer in the County of Mecklenburg, in that part of the county now called "Cabarrus" for three months under Captain William Osborne, Lieutenant Harris, Major Harris, colonel Lillington. We ready processed at Charlotte - there was but one regiment of us. Colonel Lillington left us after a few days - and we marched under the other officers mentioned from Charlotte, N.C. through Camden, S.C. to Charleston, S.C.
We got in vessels on Cooper Olivea - and went in with them - and as then placed under General Sinclair of the main Army - Colonel Malmada. I volunteered about the first of March 1780 - and arrived at Charleston about the last of March - remaining there under the Regular officers till the capitulation and surrender to the British the 12th of May 1780.
I was in the siege of that place - and was taken prisoner and, being of the militia was kept on patrol, till we were "exchanged or released. I remained a prisoner till after the three months, and was exchanged and never returned. I served out the full terms of my service, three months. I was afterward drafted in Mecklenburg County, N.C. the month of September 1787 under Captain William Landerson.
I served out these three months and was regularly discharged by Captain Williams Gardner in the month of September 1787. I served in all six months - was there three month a volunteer - and three months a draft. I was born the 6th day of February 1760 as on record in my family register.”
George resided in Montgomery County, North Carolina until his death on 05 Feb 1833. He was buried at Bethel Reformed Church, Stanly County, NC.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
