James Foreacre/Foreaker was born in 1754 in Virginia.

In 1833 in Monroe County, Ohio, James Foreaker sat for a deposition for the Pension Application of Ephriam Bates of Monroe County. It’s important to note that Monroe and Guernsey are neighboring counties in Ohio:

Also appeared before me John Linn Associate Judge as aforesaid on the day & year aforesaid, James Foreakers aged seventy-four years [Note: he would have been about 79 years old], who being duly sworn deposeth [and] saith that he was a private in Captain Liles [Captain John Lyle] company of [Virginia] Militia. That he marched from Fort MacKintosh [Fort McIntosh at present-day Beaver Pennsylvania] to Fort Lawrence as the Declarant has stated. that he personally knew the Declarant and knew that he acted as a butcher. That Deponent frequently went to the slaughter pen & saw the Declarant, who wore a straw hat, engaged in killing [beaves]; that upon hearing the declaration read, he well remembered the principal facts and circumstances mentioned therein relative to the MacKintosh campaign. That he still was able to recognize & remember the countenance of Ephraim Bates the Declarant, who was then in his presence and further this Deponent saith not. James Foreakers

Sworn to & subscribed the day and year aforesaid towit 26th March 1833

In 1783, he paid a supply tax in Berkeley County, Virginia.

James was married before 1781 to an unknown woman. After her death, he married Rosanna Saveley on 16 January 1787. He was the father of the following known children:

  • George S. was born about 1777 and married an unknown woman.
  • Isaac was born on 31 March 1781 and married 1) Charity Lent and 2) Mary Ann Stigler.
  • Jane married [?] Crawfords [this child not proven].
  • Catherine married [?] Smith [this child not proven].
  • Mary “Polly” was born about 1798 and married Peter Smith.
  • James Jr was born about 1794 and married Margaret Bill.
  • Hannah was born about 1800 and married John Hague.
  • Margaret was born about 1801 and married Reuben Hague
  • Lydia was born about 1804 and married William LaRue
  • John was born in 1806 and married Ruamah Rose.
  • Rosanna was born on 2 April 1807 and married Jonathan Parks.

He died on 2 July 1849. There are multiple stones for him, with the only stone that is contemporary with his death is located at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Salesville, Guernsey County, Ohio. Additionally, there is also a flat Veterans Administration stone. At Leatherwood Cemetery, there are two additional stones: a modern gravestone and a second flat Veterans Administration stone. It is most likely that he is buried at Salem Baptist. His second wife, Rosanna, is buried at Leatherwood Cemetery with an original stone contemporary, and her death was in March 1831.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
