 Captain William Fontaine (1754-1810), Second Virginia Regiment, 5th Company, October 21, 1775. Raised in Amelia District.

Engaged in battle of Great Bridge

Resigned as Captain in late 1777 or early 1778

Was appointed a Major and promoted to be a Lieutenant Colonel of a corps raised to guard Burgoyne’s troops taken as prisoners at Saratoga and stationed in Albemarle County.

Was at the siege of Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Wrote one of the only eye witness accounts of the surrender.
