Author: Jack Ellsworth Walker

John Follin was born on 5 September 1761 in Vienna, Fairfax, Virginia, the son of William and Bathsheba (Hurst) Follin.

At age 17, John enlisted in the Continental Navy as a Seaman and soon sailed from what is now Alexandria, Virginia. During this first sailing, his ship was fired upon by a British ship, and following a three-day chase, his ship was taken captive by the British pursuer. John was to be held captive by the British for a period of three years. During his captivity, he reports that he was held in England, Gibraltar, and Cadiz for a period of about a year each. After three years, he gained his release, returned to his native soil, and commenced a life of farming in Fairfax County, Virginia. He was a successful farmer and became independently wealthy.

He was married twice, first to Mary Barker, who died in 1813, and then to Catherine Sanford, who died in 1863.

John Follin died in 1841 and was buried on his property in Fairfax County, Virginia. He was reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery with his two wives in Section 1, Lot 294-1-2, on 23 May 1911. Of the 11 Revolutionary War veterans buried at Arlington, he is the only Navy veteran among them.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
