Author: Mark Andrew Davis

Frederick Filler was born on 27 August 1754 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and was baptized at the Lutheran Church at New Hanover, on 22 September 1754. This church is located in New Hanover Township and is the oldest Lutheran congregation in the United States. It is likely the family lived nearby. The Last Will and Testament of Frederick’s father, dated 4 January 1774, was from Frederick County, Maryland. This suggests the family had moved from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, to Frederick County, Maryland, between 1754 and 1774.

Frederick enlisted at Frederick County, Maryland in 1776. He served six months as a Private in Captain Valentine Creger's Company under Colonel Wood's Maryland Regiment of the Flying Camp. He also served in the German Regiment.

Frederick married Catherine Border, who is identified in a Revolutionary War widow’s pension file as Mrs. Catherine Hanker, formerly Catherine Filler. They married in the town of Frederick, Maryland, about 1782. John Rimmund, a friend of the Filler family, indicated he met Frederick about 1786 at Loudon County, Virginia, and at that time, Frederick and Catherine were married and had one or two children. He also stated he knew Catherine’s father, Nicholas Border. At the time John married about 1789, the Filler family had several children.

Catherine’s brother, Nicholas, testified that his sister was married to Frederick Filler in the spring of 1783, or prior. He stated the wedding party left his father’s home to go to Fredericktown, Maryland for the purpose of the marriage by Reverend Christian Hanker and returned the same day.

Before the death of Frederick, the Filler family moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles north of the Pennsylvania-Maryland state border. Their plantation was near the small village of Rainburg, Pennsylvania. Frederick Filler died November 27, 1797, in his home in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, aged about 43 years.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
