John Fernald/Furnald was born about 1742.

During the raid on Fort William and Mary in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he was among those who captured powder from the fort on 14 December 1774. He was a selectman in Portsmouth during 1775. He signed the Association Test there on 14 August 1776.

During the Revolutionary War, he was a matross artilleryman who served in the coastal defenses of Piscataqua Harbor at Fort Sullivan and Fort Washington. He was listed in Captain Eliphalet Daniels’s Company at Fort Sullivan on 18 March 1776. He was among those who petitioned the General Assembly on 4 June 1777 and the Council and House of Representatives on 23 September 1777 for an increase in wages. He was later among those at Fort Washington who petitioned the Council and House of Representatives on 14 June 1779 to be paid wages. On 10 April 1781, he enlisted as a private in Captain Ebenezer Dearing’s Company, which was stationed at Fort Washington and engaged in the defense of Piscataqua Harbor. He appeared on a muster roll dated 25 June 1781.

The Patriot died on 23 November 1792, aged 50 years. He was buried in North Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
