Author: Eric Henry Troutman

Johannes Faust was born on 3 March 1739, in Bern Township, Lancaster County (now Bern Township, Berks County), Pennsylvania. He was the son of Philip “Lebs” Faust and his wife Magdalena Albrecht who came to Pennslvania from Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany in 1733.

About 1762 Johannes married Anna Clara Schmeck (1739-1815) daughter of Johannes and Elizabeth (Schiffer) Schmeck who was also a native of Berks County, Pennsylvania. Johannes was the father of seven children:

  1. Johannes.
  2. Henry.
  3. Elizabeth.
  4. Philip.
  5. Maria Elizabeth.
  6. Jacob.
  7. Magdalena.

During the Revolutionary War, Johannes served as a private in Captain DeTurck’s Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia. His brothers Philip and Jacob were also veterans of the war.

He was a farmer his entire life, having 600 acres of land in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and 200 acres of woodland in Schuylkill County. He died May 6, 1792, in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, probably on his plantation. He, and his wife Anna Clara, are buried at Salem Belleman’s Church in the old cemetery, Centre Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The second church building which was built in 1815 when Anna Clara Faust died is still standing today (2015) having never been electrified and is still used for special services and marriages.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
