James Farnsworth was born Dec 2, 1727 in Groton, MA; died March 10, 1800 in Fairfax, VT.  He married Susanna Putnam, who died July 12, 1756 aged 26 yrs.  He then married Sarah Woodward and later married Betsey _____ , who died July 18, 1796 aged 23 yrs.   He followed his brother Ebenezer Farnsworth to Charlestown, NH. He was a man of unusual ability.  He was on the Roll of Capt. Humphrey Hobb's company of Rangers in 1748 that fought the Indians, June 26, 1748, 12 miles west of Fort Dunbar (see History of Northfield) He was a member of the company of Capt. Phineas Stevens for the defense of Fort at No. 4 in 1750.

During the American Revolution, James was a Lieutenant and Captain in the 16th regiment of New Hampshire State militia.  James and Betsey Farnsworth are buried in Fairfax Plains, VT.

James was the son of Josiah Farnsworth & wife, Mary Pierce of Groton, MA. James Farnsworth and his 1st wife, Susanna had issue at Charlestown, N.H.:

2. Susanna Farnsworth b. June 5, 1756; m. Joseph Weed on April 11, 1782; she died November 9, 1826.

5. Benjamin Farnsworth b. Feb 19, 1763; d. Aug 15, 1822; m. (1) Sept 7, 1785, Rebecca Wilson b. Jan 4,
1765; d. Oct 27, 1804 at Jericho, VT. He m. (2) Feb 17, 1805, Clarissa Hunt b. Jan 12, 1799; buried Feb 7, 1806 at Richmond, VT.  He m. (3) Aug 17, 1807, Sally Hunt b. ca 1786; of Richmond,  VT; buried at Lockport, N.Y.
6. James Farnsworth b. Oct 25, 1767; located first at Fairfield, VT but removed to Fairfax, VT soon after.  He was a man of prominence and was identified with the militia soldiery of the State in which he took a deep interest and in respect to this military element he received the title of General.
