Author: David DeForest Haught

Colonel John Evans was born December 9, 1737 near Alexandria, VA in Fairfax or Loudoun County where his father had settled and married after emigrating from Wales.  He attended school in Alexandria and on 24 March 1758 married Rebecca Ann Martin, born in 11 April 1738.  John and Rebecca had eight children between 1764 and 1784 (Margaret, Dudley, John, Nimrod, Enoch, Rawley, James, Marmaduke).  John was one of the founders of Monongalia County.  He served as the 1st Clerk of the County (1780-1789) and was a Trustee of the town of Morganstown (today Morgantown).  He signed the May 1776 Convention in Williamsburg for Independence.  He was a Monongalia County Delegate to the Virginia Convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution, June 1778.  He opposed (as did 78 others), along with other notables Patrick Henry, French Strother, and George Mason. He served in Dunmore's War, 1774, a conflict between the Colony of Virginia and the Shawnee and Mingo American Indian nations.  He enlisted in the Revolutionary Army in April or May of 1778 and served as a Colonel until Dec. 29, 1778 under Generals McIntosh and Washington.  He commanded militia from South Branch and Ohio Valley.  He died at the age of 96, 13 July 1834.  Colonel Evans is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morgantown, WV; his tombstone is marked with a plaque from the Colonel John Evans Chapter, NSDAR.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
