Joel Elam (1736-1798) was from Lunenburg County which later became Mecklenburg County Virginia in 1765. Fought in the French and Indian Wars (1754 -1763) in the Virginia militia. During the French & Indian War, the House of Burgesses passed an act for the defense of the frontier of the colony on 14 Sep 1758 and Joel was paid 1lb 14 sh. in Lunenburg Co. He received Bounty Land in Lunenburg Co. VA before he was married there in 1758.
In 1782 a census was taken in Mecklenburg Co., VA and he was on it with 11 whites and no slaves. He hadn't moved. He was a Charter Member of the Meherrin Baptist Church.
. He was a proponent of the Revolution and gave grain and meat for the war effort. His oldest son Alexander was a private in the Revolution. One of Joel's sons was Peter. Peter's youngest son, John, married Martha Yancey of Mecklenburg county in 1835 and then soon after moved into Granville County NC. Will in Mecklenburg Co., VA, dated 21 Apr 1797 and Recorded 10 Sep 1798.

The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
