Author: Dr. Michael Bernard Gunn
Born on Sept 27, 1754 in Albany, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He served as a Private enlisting on 3 Mar 1776 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He served as a dragoon in Captain Bartholomew von Herr’s Cavalry of the Continental Line. This unit was General Washington’s bodyguard and the guardian of his baggage, in Capt. von Heer's Light Dragoons, 1778-1783. He married Maria Catherine Dumm (1762-1754) in 1785; children: George b. 1808, Barbara b. 1796, Henry b. 1794, Peter b. 1790, Magdalene b. 1803, Lydia, Catherine b. 1797, John b. 1800, Anna Maria b. 1792, Sara b. 1805 & Christian b.1788. Peter received his discharge 23 Jun 1783 and his pension became effective 13 August 1828 in Colerain Township.
He died on April 20, 1837 in Colerain Twp., Ross Co., OH and was buried at Old Lutheran Cemetery, Adelphi, OH. MI: "Peter Dumm died Apr 20, 1837, aged 82 yrs, 6 mos, 23 days. Catherine wife of Peter Dumm died Aug 3, 1854, aged 92 yrs, 4 mos, 25 days." His widow received a pension as given in 1840 census, then aged 78 yrs. Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
