Author: Dr. Derrick W Spell

Armand Gabriel Allard Duplantier was born on 28 June 1753 in Voiron, France, the son of Joseph Guy Allard du Plantier and Jeanne Gabrielle Trenonay. He came to America in 1778 as part of the Foix Regiment sent from France to support the American Revolution.

In that capacity, he served in the infantry, as a spy, and as an aide-de-camp to General Lafayette. After he mustered out of service, Armand unsuccessfully attempted to enroll in the American troops under General George Washington.

He then traveled via the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Louisiana at the request of his uncle, Jean-Claude Trenonay. He arrived in Louisiana in March 1781.

Armand married Augustine Gerard in July 1781, and they had the following known children;

  • Fergus Augustin was born on 9 October 1783 and married Marie Josephine Joyce.
  • Armand Allard was born in about 1783 and married Marie Francoise Arsena Fortin.
  • Guy Allard was born on 19 July 1791 and married Antonia Azema Avart.
  • Augustine Eulalie was born on 18 July 1799 and married Louis Estevan Favrot.

His first wife died in 1799, and he remarried Constance Rochon, widow of John Joyce, on 4 January 1802. Their known children were:

  • Euphemie Amelia was born in about 1804.
  • Augustin was born in about 1805 and married Marie Lopez.
  • Didier was born in about 1806.
  • Alberic Nicholas was born on 1 February 1808.
  • Alfred Joseph was born in 1813 and married Susanne Evans.

The Patriot remained in Louisiana until his death on 30 September 1827. His funeral procession included an honor guard from the garrison in Baton Rouge. He was buried in the Historic Highland Cemetery in Baton Rouge, one block from the South Gate of Louisiana State University.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
