Author: Dr. Derrick W. Spell

Michel Doucet was born around 1753 in Port Royal, Acadia, Canada, the son of Michel Laurent Doucet and Marguerite Martin.   Michel and his family were part of le grand derangement of Acadians and were released from Halifax in August 1763.  They arrived in New Orleans in 1765 and soon settled at La Manque on Bayou Teche in lower St. Martin Parish the following year.  Michel and his family were counted on the Attakapas Post census in 1769, 1771 and 1777.

Patriot Doucet served as a soldier in the Attakapas Militia under the command of Governor Don Bernardo de Galvez. In this capacity, he fought in the Battles of Fort Bute and Baton Rouge in September 1779. His service is documented on pages 289-290 of Churchill’s SAR Spanish Records.

Michel married Marguerite Landry on 30 Jan 1793 in St. Martinville. They settled at La Pointe on upper Bayou Teche in St. Martin Parish near present-day Breaux Bridge. They had three children who survived childhood:

  • Jean Ursin born in November 1795 and married Marie Apollonie Dore on 19 Feb 1816
  • Euphrosine was born around 1801 and married Isaac Forman on 09 Dec 1816
  • Mariana was born on 03 Jan 1805.

The Patriot remained in St. Martin Parish until his death on 14 November 1804 and was buried in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in St. Martinville.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
