Jesse Buford Dodson was born 22 Nov 1752 in Halifax County, Virginia, the son of Thomas Dodson Jr. and Elizabeth Rose. Jesse died on Nov 22, 1843 in McMinn County, Tennessee and is buried in the Matlock Cemetery, Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee. Jesse married his first cousin Ruth in 1774 and he settled on land given to him by his father and began his life as a Baptist Minister. In 1781 Jesse sold his Virginia land to relatives and headed west to Tennessee. Jesse is listed as a member of the County Line Baptist Church (also known as the North on Holston River Baptist Church). In 1801 he joined the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Springdale, Tennessee and became the Pastor of the Church from November, 1801 to November, 1805. This church was built by Daniel Boone in the winter of 1795-1796 and is still standing. It is one of the oldest churches still standing in the State of Tennessee.

Jesse would travel to McMinn County, Tennessee, around 1820 just after the Hiwassee Purchase with the Cherokee had opened the land to settlement. Dodson was involved in establishing many of the early churches in McMinn County around Salem, Hiwassee, Friendship and New Hopewell. He is listed in the 1919 book of early Tennessee Baptist Preachers. He and Ruth owned ten slaves which she had inherited from her father. When Ruth died in 1828 Jesse set the slaves free stating that "a Bill of Sale of Negroes in my pocket would be a bad passport at the Gates of Heaven."

There is no record of Jesse Dodson service in the Revolutionary War. However, he did receive a Land Grant for service in the War (possibly providing provisions, security) in part of what was then North Carolina and is now Tennessee. His name is also on a list of those who took an Oath of Allegiance to the State of Virginia.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
