Author: Herman C. Brown
Thomas, having moved from Sutton and then a resident of Dudley, Worchester County, Massachusetts, served as a Private in Captain Jonathan Carrie's Company, Colonel Josiah Whitney's Regiment from May 30, 1776 to November 30, 1776 (6 months, 6 days).

Beginning on January 21, 1777, Thomas served 21 days as a Private in Captain Nathaniel Healy's Company, Colonel Jonathan Holman's Regiment on service to Rhode Island.

From July 30 to September 13, 1778, Thomas served 1 month and 15 days as a Private in Captain Reuben Sibley's Company, Colonel Josiah Whitney's Regiment.

Thomas married, February 23, 1779 at Sturbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts, Abigail Putney (1762-1802) by whom he had 9 children (6 sons and 3 daughters): Jared (1779-1859), Phebe (b. 1781), Richard (b. 1783), Sally (b. 1785), Abigail (1787-1790), Thomas (b. 1789), Rufus (1791-1804), Phineas (b. 1792), and Eleazer (1802-1822).

In the 1790 US Census of Warwick, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, Thomas was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male of 16 years of age and upwards, 3 Free White Males under 16, and 3 Free White Females.

In the 1800 US Census of Barre, Orange County, Vermont, Thomas (Thos) was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male and Female of 26 thru 44 years of age, 1 Free White Male and Free White Female of 16 thru 25, 1 Free White Male and Female of 10 thru 15, and 2 Free White Males under 10 years of age.

Thomas's 1st wife died, February 22, 1802. Less than 5 months later, July 10, 1802 at Barre, he married his 2nd wife Abigail Harper (1761-1804) by whom he had 3 children: twins Abigail (1803-1803) and _____ (b. 1803), and Asa (b. 1804).

Thomas married, April 13, 1807 at Middlesex, Chittenden (now Washington) County, Vermont, for his 3rd wife, Sarah (Sally) Worth (1770-1862) by whom he had 4 children (1 son and 3 daughters): Abigail (b. 1808), Lovina (1810-1882), Jefferson (b. 1812), and Angelina (b. 1814).

In the 1820 US Census of Barre, Thomas was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male and 1 Free White Female of 45 years of age and upwards, 1 Free White Male and 1 Free White Female 16 to 26, 1 Free White Female 10 to 16, and 1 Free White Male and 2 Free White Females under 10 years of age.
