Elisha Doane was born November 25, 1724 in the village of East Town (now Eastham) located on the easternmost shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts on the Atlantic Ocean. Elisha is a child of Jonathan Doane and Martha Higgins [1]. Elisha is said to have been a blacksmith.

Elisha Doane married his first wife Mary about 1753; Mary’s maiden name has yet to be discovered. Elisha and Mary had at least six children: Oliver; Amos; Nathan; Elisha Jr.; Martha; and Lucy. The family lived in East Town until about 1790.

December 5, 1775, Elisha’s father Jonathan made his will in which he named Elisha as one of the executors.

April 20, 1776 Elisha Doane was commissioned a Captain of the 6th (2nd Eastham) Company, 2nd Barnstable County Regiment of Massachusetts Militia [2].

January 24, 1780, Elisha’s father Jonathan died at Eastham. Jonathan’s will was probated February 8, 1780, and Elisha, named as one of the executors, declined to act as such, stating: "As I live remote and my business is such, that I resign acting as executor."

By 1790 Elisha Doane and family had left Cape Cod and moved nearer to Boston in the coastal village of Cohasset, Massachusetts [3].

By 1800 Elisha Doane's first wife Mary had passed away; Elisha had relocated 70 miles inland to Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts [4] where, toward the end of 1800 [5], Elisha married his second wife, Mrs. Martha [nee Johnson] Allen. After their marriage, Elisha and Martha settled in Spencer, Worcester County, Massachusetts, a few miles east of Brookfield. They had no known children together.

Elisha Doane made his will, October 23, 1804, in which he mentions, in this order: wife Martha Doane; son Nathan Doane; daughter Martha Doane; daughter Lucy Flagg; four sons: Oliver; Amos; Nathan; and Elisha Jr.

Elisha Doane Sr. died at Spencer, Massachusetts July 13, 1810, age about 86 [6]. His remains rest in the Evergreen Cemetery, East Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts [7].

Elisha Doane’s second wife Martha (Johnson)(Allen) Doane died November 10, 1837, probably at Spencer, Worcester County, Massachusetts [8]. Her remains also rest in the Evergreen Cemetery [9], East Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts next to her second husband, Elisha [10].

Worthy of note: Elisha Doane’s second wife Martha, first married Jason Allen, a Revolutionary War soldier who died September 15, 1777 on active duty. Martha Doane, as the widow of Elisha Doane, and former widow of Jason Allen, applied for a widow's pension May 4, 1837 at age 88, for Jason Allen's service as a Revolutionary War soldier. Martha received her widow’s pension (No. W22960) based on the military service of her first husband Jason Allen, not on the military service of her second husband Elisha Doane as cited in some Doane family histories.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
