  • Dixon Farm Cemetery, Lawrence County, Indiana is the location of the Gravesites of Patriot William D DIXON and his wife Liscom TAYLOR on the Old Dixon Farm in Guthrie Township. There were more unmarked graves in this cemetery
  • The Find-a-Grave memorial is not where the Patriot was buried. The photos are of the actual location that has since been bulldozed away. Fortunately, we have photos, but not the stones today. Photos courtesy of Ed Hitchcock, Daniel Guthrie Chaper, INSSAR


Directions to Cemetery / Gravesite:

Take US Hwy 50 East of Bedford to near the Jackson County line, turn right or south on Leesville Ft Ritner Co Road and go about two miles to Leesville, continue south of Leesville on the same road for about 4.2 miles to the the Jasper McKeaigg Co Road, turn left and go about 6/10 of a mile and turn right or east on Pickett Lane (graveled County road), go about 3/10 miles and cemetery is on the right out in a field on the Old Dixon Farm on private land.

William Dixon was born about 1756 in North Carolina.

He lived in Pitt County, North Carolina, and married Liscum Taylor before 1775. He continued to live in Pitt County, North Carolina, until after 1800, when he moved to Roane County, Tennessee. In 1819, he moved to Lawrence County, Indiana.

His known children were:

  • Absalom Dixon was born about 1775 and married Lydia Nelson.
  • Nancy Dixon
  • Osy Dixon married Jenny Boden.
  • Mary "Polly" Dixon was born in 1791 and married (1) James Sappington, and (2) David Boylen.
  • William M. Dixon was born on 1 April 1792 and married Lucy Ann Harvey.
  • Thomas Dixon was born on 16 August 1796 and married Sarah Newkirk.
  • Shadrack Dixon

He enlisted as a private for 12 months on 15 April 1781 in Captain Anthony Sharpe’s Company, serving in the Continental Line. Captain Sharpe was in the 1st North Carolina Regiment, which fought at the Battle of Eutaw Springs on 8 September 1781.

The Patriot died on 20 December 1835 at Fort Ritner, Lawrence County, Indiana and was buried there at the Proctor Cemetery.
