Author: James DeChant Long
Peter was born 15 Jul 1755 in Tulpehocken, Lebanon County, PA and died 23 Feb 1838 on his farm in Tulpehocken. He inherited the plantation and 152 acres from his father, Johann Adam Diefenbach, whose will was probated on 16 Dec 1777. Adam married Mary Sibilla Kobel. Peter was the youngest male of Adam but Adam willed him the farm so it would “stay in the family the longest”. Adam, b. 1712 in the Hudson Valley of New York State, descended from Johan Conrad Diefenbach, b 1659 in Wiesloch, Germany. Conrad had 7 children, 4 born in Germany and 3 in the Hudson Valley of NY. Conrad’s family left Germany 15 May 1709 and landed in London, England 11 June 1709 and were sent to a refugee camp in Blackheath, England. When his family came to America and landed on Mutten Island (New York, America) in June 1710 they were sent up the Hudson River to Livingston Manor, NY to help in the tar making project for the Royal Navy (tar for sealing hulls of naval vessels). It was here that Adam was born along with two sisters. Around the spring of 1723 the family came down the Susquehanna River and settled in Tulpehocken. Adam inherited the Diefenbach plantation and farmed it. Adam is in the DAR Patriot Index as # A2049923.

Peter is found in the DAR Patriot Index #1, page 193 (written as “Peter

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
