John Duncan was probably born at Augusta County, Virginia about 1741.1 He was living at Fauquier County in 1761, where he appeared on the militia roster of Captain William Edmund’s Company during the French and Indian War.2 He enlisted about 1778 in Captain Chinn’s Company of Cornel Elias Edmund’s Regiment of the Virginia Militia. He marched through Maryland and Pennsylvania. He served about one year, and saw no action.
Duncan moved to Montgomery County, Virginia, the next year and served in the companies of Captains Cloyd and Daniel Trigg, of Cornel William Preston’s Regiment. He marched to Kings Mountain, and arrived the day after the battle. He engaged Tories at Shallow Ford and served 11 months.3
John Duncan married Betty Anne, whose family name is not known, about 1770.4 They were the parents of at least four children: Elizabeth, John, Blanch and Mary.5
In his Revolutionary War Pension deposition, he gave his age as ninety-one years, and was a resident of Floyd County, Virginia. He died after 20 January 1834 at Floyd County.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
