Stephen DeMaranville was born on 15 August 1750 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, the son of Louis De Moranville and Susannah Crapo of Dartmouth.

Stephen enlisted at Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 29 September 1777 as a Private in the Company of Captain Benjamin Wilcox of Colonel Nathaniel Freeman’s Regiment. The term of his service was thirty days, during which they were on a secret expedition to Rhode Island.

Later in the war, he appeared on the roll of October 1780 in the Company of Captain Zebadiah Dewey of Colonel Gideon Warren's Regiment of the Vermont Militia.

Stephen married Deliverance Delia Barden on 13 August 1767. Their marriage is recorded in the registers at Dartmouth and Freetown, Massachusetts. The known children of Stephen and Deliverance were:

  • Elizabeth was born about 1769.
  • Thankful, born about 1770.
  • Louis was born on 20 March 1775.
  • Mary “Polly” was born about 1772.
  • Martha Patricia “Patty” was born in March 1777.

  • William Gifford was born on 22 July 1781.
  • Delia was born on 7 June 1783.
  • Irena was born on 29 May 1785.
  • James was born on 9 June 1787.
  • Eber was born on 8 September 1789.

Stephen died on 24 September 1827 at Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont, and was buried at the Hosford Crossing Cemetery at Poultney. His epitaph reads, “Mr. Stephen De Maranville died Sept. 21st, 1827, aged 77 years.” The Heber Allen Chapter of the Vermont DAR erected a copper plaque with the names of 44 Revolutionary soldiers, including Stephen de Maranville.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
