Robert Davidson was born on 02 Nov 1729 in Monmouth County, NJ to William Davison and Ane Brinson. The first Davisons arrived in New Jersey in 1685. They were farmers through the first three generations and held a variety of occupation from then on. Early family land holdings were in the general vicinity of the Tennent Church near present day Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ. Several Davidsons were original members of Tennent church and served as Deacons and Elders.

Tennent church was also located on the Monmouth battlefield in 1778. Colonial trips and artillery were positioned on the Davison property during the battle. Family tradition holds the Mollie Pitcher served the Colonial Artillery which was located on the Davison land.

Robert Davidson served as a private in the 3d New Jersey Regiment from 1776 to 1777. His cousin, William Davison served in the 2d New Jersey Regiment and his nephew, John Davison served in the 1st New Jersey Regiment.

He married Susanna prior to 1760. They had three children: Margaret (1760), Susanna (1762) and Robert (1767).

Robert died on 16 July 1803 in Monmouth County, NJ. He is buried in the Brainerd Cemetery, 1st Presbyterian Church, Cranbury, NJ.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
