Author: Jerry Ray Sayre
Thomas William Davis was born in 1719 on the family Farm near Westerly, RI. He was the 1st son of Rev. John and Elizabeth (Maxson) Davis. Thomas William was the grandson of Rev. William Davis who was a noted man of God, an early author, and outspoken advocate in the Seventh Day Baptist Church, helping to found that church in Westerly, and later in Shrewsbury, NJ.

Thomas William was 28 years old when he married Tacy Crandall the daughter of John and Mary (Yeomans) Crandall on 8 Dec 1737 in Westerly, RI.

The Davis family moved to Monmouth County, NJ in the early 1750’s.

The Davis family owned a shipyard at the beginning of the Revolution and were loyalists, but after the British burned it, they became supporters of the Patriot Cause. Thomas William Davis was made Captain of the Monmouth County Militia during the Revolution, (Adjunct Gen. Office, Trenton, NJ).

Thomas William had 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. 3 of the 4 daughters were married before or during the Revolution and all 3 sons-in-law served in the Monmouth County Militia; Rev Jacob Davis (P-144574), Ephraim Maxson (P-243359), and Thomas Babcock Jr. (P-106207). All were members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Shrewsbury, NJ.

In 1789 the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Shrewsbury, NJ voted to sell their building and put the money in the treasury, which they did. In September that year, they embarked on their journey through Pennsylvania, and eventually settled in New Salem, Virginia, (now West Virginia),. Thomas William Davis died 15 July 1791 at White Day Creek during their journey to what is now, West Virginia. He was 72 years old. (Source: “DAVIS, The Settlers of Salem, West Virginia” by Suzie Davis Nicholson, 1992). No marker or headstone has been found.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
