GRAVE IS MARKED - REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER VIRGINIA MILITIA - PLACED BY HUNT'S SPRING CHAPTER NSDAR

Directions to Cemetery / Gravesite:

Author: Edwin Dudley Burwell III

Samuel Davis was born 24 December 1755 at Augusta (present-day Rockbridge) County, Virginia.  His father was killed by Shawnee Indians when he was about three years old.  He was raised by his mother and his older brother, John.  The Davis Family moved to Washington County, Virginia, about 1776.  He married Jane Allison in 1776 at Washington County.

He served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War.  In 1776, he served under Captain Robert Craig in the Christie Campaign, fighting the Cherokee.  In 1777 and 1778, under Captain Mathew Willoughby, he fought against the Shawnee.

In 1779, he went with Colonel Benjamin Logan and Captain Josiah Harland to Kentucky to fight the Shawnee.  They fought the Shawnee at Little Miami River and burned part of the Indian town and returned to Washington County.

In 1780 under Colonel Arthur Campbell, Captain Joseph Black and Lieutenant John Davis (his brother), he fought the Cherokee at East Tennessee.  The Annals of Southwest Virginia indicates he fought at Kings Mountain.  He was part of the "Over the Mountains Men."

After the Revolutionary War, tax records evidence he lived at Washington County, Virginia, from 1782 through 1796.  He removed to Blount County, Tennessee, and lived there from 1797 until 1804 or 1805.  He relocated to Madison County, Alabama.

Records at the Winchester, Tennessee, library indicate he moved from Blount County to Franklin County with Jesse Bean and his family.  Nathaniel Davis, Samuel's oldest son, owned land next to Jesse Bean at Franklin County.  Samuel and his other children moved to the New Market area of Madison County, Alabama, before Alabama achieved statehood.  Samuel Davis was considered the second oldest settler at Madison County.

Samuel died 31 August 1842 at Madison County.  He was buried at Mount Paran Campground and Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
