Author: Thomas R. Davis
Jonathan Davis was born 1730. There are three accounts of his early life.
1. Jonathan’s father died with he was quite young and left him, a younger brother, maybe one or two sisters, and his mother who remarried. The stepfather treated the boys’ badly, and Jonathan ran away from home at the age of 12 and made his way to America.

2. …he was captured off the coast of Wales and brought to New York [in the 1700’s York County in Virginia was known as New York], possibly aboard a piratic tramp trading vessel and disposed of upon some terms to a New York merchant. Who afterwards assisted him in making a start in life in this new land.

3. Another account is that he was the son of John Davis born 1680 and died 1734 in St. Marks VA (We are working on DNA projects to clarify this)
There are two books, “A Genealogy of the Davis and Goss Family, by Henry William Clark, 1905, Harrisburg Publishing Company, and “Jonathan Davis of Orange County, Virginia and Wilkes County, Georgia and Some of His Descendants” by Mildred Davis Davidson, Family History Publishers, Bountiful, Utah. Both books are very informative and interesting to read.
Jonathan was a Captain in the Francis Taylor’s company of foot in Regiment Of Volunteer. Guards at the Barracks in Albermarle County, Virginia, between 29 Jan and 17 March 1776. He was also a contributor to the cause with 63 3/5 Gallons of Brandy on 23 Sept 1780; 117 lbs pork on 19 May 1781; 6 bushels wheat on 9 June 1781; 350 lbs of beef on 9 Sept 1781 and 500 lbs of beef on 18 Oct 1781.
Jonathan married Lucy Gibbs, the daughter of a Prominent VA family, about 1756.
They bought lands and settled in Orange Co., VA where all 10 of his children grew up and were married before he left VA and settled in Wilkes County, GA about 1803.
Jonathan Davis died in Wilkes County Feb 1817.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.

Additional guidelines around the Biography writeup can be found here:
