Author: John Andrew Whitler

George Davidson was born in 1738 in Pennsylvania, the son of Samuel I. and Jean or Jane Davidson.

He married Mary Woods in 1763 or 1764 in Virginia. She was born in 1743 and died in 1805. They had the following known children:

  • Samuel was born in 1766 and married Sally Logan.
  • Susan was born in 1768
  • Jane was born in 1770
  • Mary "Polly" was born in 1772
  • Martha "Mattie" was born in about 1760 and married Hugh Leeper.
  • James was born on 13 November 1777 and Harriet Ballinger.
  • William was born in 1781
  • Michael was born in about 1782 and married Lucretia Ballenger Davidson.
  • Nancy was born on 8 February 1785 and married James Robertson.
  • George Robert was born in 1785

During the Revolutionary War, George was a Lieutenant in the Virginia Militia from 1780-1781.

In 1783, George decided to move his family to Kentucky, arriving in 1785. There were no roads across the mountains then, so they had to travel by pack horses. At that time, the country was populated with unfriendly Native Americans who did not take kindly to non-native travelers crossing their territories.  Every man, it was reported, led a pack horse with one hand and carried a gun with the other to defend himself and others against possible attack.

George emigrated to Stanford, Kentucky, from Staunton, Shenandoah Valley, Valley. He settled in Crab Orchard in the same city, Stanford, which was the county seat.

The Patriot died before 10 July 1826 in Stanford County, Kentucky.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
