Josiah Darby was born 15 April 1734 at Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a son of Josias Darby and Henrietta Kephart. In 1760, he was living at Montgomery County, Maryland, where he married Drusilla Lipham, a daughter of Daniel Andrew Lipham and Daisy Cofield. They had eight children: five boys and three girls.
In 1778, Josiah took the Oath of Allegiance at Montgomery County, Maryland, where he was a farmer. He served in the Maryland Militia at Frederick (Montgomery) County, in the Third Company, Upper Battalion, under Colonel Zadock Magruder and Lieutenant Colonel Francis Deakins.
By 1790, he and the remaining family moved to Union District, South Carolina, where he remained for the rest of his life. He died 3 September 1821.
