Patriot Biography- Sylvanus Crowell- Born Oct.25,1760, S. Orange, NJ; Died Feb. 8,1838, Essex Cty. NJ; Married (1) Mary Pierson(1758-1838) abt. 1780-81. Sylvanus and Mary were buried in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery, Newark, NJ. In 1959 this cemetery was bulldozed over, paved, and turned into a parking lot.
Sylvanus Crowell- Military Service-Sylvanus served as a Private in Captain Josiah Pierson’s company of the New Jersey Militia. Also in Captain Isaac Smith’s Company; Captain Thomas Baldwin’s Company, Captain James Wheeler’s Company and John Craig’s Company. He took part in the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey on June 28, 1778 which was led by George Washington. Sylvanus was also present in the engagements at Springfield (June 23, 1780) and Connecticut Farms(June 7, 1780). Recompense Crowell, father of Sylvanus, served in the Revolutionary war as did five brothers of Sylvanus-Samuel, Daniel, John , Aaron, David. Family of Sylvanus Crowell- Sylvanus and Mary Pierson had twelve children. They were Caleb, John Enos, Nehemiah, Moses, Aaron, Hannah, Rhoda, Sallie, Eunice, Phoebe and Maria. Sylvanus owned and operated a grist mill probably in South Orange, NJ. Rhoda Crowell, daughter of Sylvanus, married Ira Hand, oldest son of Patriot David Hand. Ira Hand and wife Rhoda Crowell were the first of the Hand family to move from the South Orange to Elizabethtown NJ.
