Samuel Crawford Jr. was born on June 2, 1758 in York County, PA. The son of Scots-Irish immigrants he had a hatred for the British since birth. At the age of 16 he and his father fought in the Battle of Pleasant Point against the Indian Chief Cornstalk. When the revolution began Samuel Jr. joined Anthony Wayne's 4th Pennsylvania Regiment right away in 1776. The 4th regiment was then changed to the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment of Foot in 1777. He was made sergeant and remained that rank until the cruel winter of 1778 at Valley Forge where he became very ill. His Captain begged to take him along in the Spring and was given permission to put Samuel Jr. in a wagon. He was in the hospital at Morristown. Because he was too ill to do his duties he was lowered to private where he stayed until the end of the war in 1784. He his father and all five of his brothers were at Yorktown. After the war he went to Knox County, TN and is buried in the Washington Pike Churchyard Cemetery there. He died o 14 May 1822.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
