Author: Frank Furman

Archelous Craft, a son of James Craft, a Palatine, was born on 25 December 1749 in Neuse County, North Carolina. In 1785 in North Carolina, he married Elizabeth "Betsey" Adams, daughter of John Adams, Jr., and his first wife Mary Boone, sister of Squire Boone, father of Daniel Boone. Elizabeth was born in 1770 in Loudon County, Virginia, and died in 1810 in Letcher County, Kentucky. Archelous's second wife was Cena Wright, from Virginia, and she raised the younger children.

During the Revolutionary War, in 1778, Archelous Craft volunteered in Captain Samuel Johnston's Company in Wilkes County, North Carolina. They fought for two and ½ months against Cherokee warriors on the French Broad River. In 1780 Archelous again joined Captain Samuel Johnston's company, a North Carolina State Troops regiment commanded by Colonel Ben Herndon, which marched to Monks Corner on 14 April 1780, and the Siege of Charleston, South Carolina (29 March through 12 May 1780). He was involved in the 6 August 1780 battle at Hanging Rock, North Carolina, and saw General Greene. He was discharged in 1781 at Bell's Branch, near Salisbury, North Carolina, by Colonel Lock. Again in 1781, he volunteered for three months of service in Wilkes County under Captain Alex Gordon, Colonel Malmondy, and Colonel Lock. On 8 September 1781, he was engaged at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina.

In 1804 the Craft Family, along with a small band of pioneers, moved to Kentucky and settled about 1806-1807 two miles up Craft Colly, a tributary of the Upper Kentucky River. He received eight land grants totaling 400 acres between 1823-1841. On 5 November 1833, he received a pension for serving in the North Carolina Line.

The known children of Archelous and Elizabeth:

  • Nancy was born in 1783 and married William Caudill.
  • John William was born in 1795 and married Susan Hagin.
  • James was born in 1793 and married Drusilla Hammonds.
  • Stephen
  • Ezekiel
  • Archelous Jr. was born in 1801 and married Nancy Polly.
  • William was born in 1806 and married Rachel [surname unknown].
  • Sarah" Sallie" married William Hammonds.
  • Charity was born in 1809 and married Harvey Pritchard.

The Patriot died on 8 November 1853 at Craft's Colly Plantation, Ermine, Letcher County, Kentucky.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
