ames was born in Ireland to David Copeland & Deborah Van Bushkirk. He came to Virginia with his parents when he was 3 or 4 years of age. The Copeland Homestead Farm was built in 1765. It is located on the northeast side of Short Hill Mountain, just south of Hillsboro, VA and is one of the oldest dwellings in the area. He drafted for 12 months service in 1778, serving under Captain Philip Slaughter in the 11th Virginia Regiment. They were at Valley Forge and crossed the Delaware River with General Washington. He was at the battle of Monmouth June 778. Then marched to White Plains and then West Point. He was with a fatigue party that repaired the fortress. He was honorably discharged in the Spring of 1779.About Jul 1781, he was drafted into Loudoun County for militia duty for three months. In Captain William George's Company went to Richmond. He was with the Light Infantry engaged in light skirmishes along the flanks of the army along the Lines. He married Sarah Akers and they had 9 children.
Children - Jane, Craven Akers, Sallie (Sarah), Nancy, Uriah, Pleasants, Zillah, Elizabeth & Hannah.

He became on of the trustees of Katoctin Baptist Church, of which he was appointed to superintend the building of the church and gallery.

The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
