Author: Robert Dale Howell
Jacob Comfort was born in Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, NY, about 1726, and married Anna Magdalene Sensabough about 1746 in the Old Brick Reformed Church, Orange County, NY. They had at least four daughters; Maria Elizabeth, Anna, Elizabeth, and Elsie. All were baptized in the Old Brick, or Dutch, Reformed Church between 1747 and 1757.
In April 1759, a Jacob Comfort enlisted as a Private in Capt. Remsen’s (or Capt. Ephraim Morse’s) Company of the Queen’s County Provincial Troops. He was described as a farmer, born in Newtown, 5 ft. 9 in. tall, brown eyes, dark complexion and dark brown hair. During the French and Indian War, the unit saw action near Lake George and in the campaign against Fort Niagara.
However, based on the dates of his marriage and the baptisms of his children, Jacob Comfort had apparently moved from Queen’s County to Orange County prior to 1746. In April 1759, a Jacob Comfort was listed as a farmer living in Orange County, NY, in 1767 as a freeholder in Newburgh, Orange County, and as having paid taxes at Fishkill, Dutchess County in 1773.
Regardless of the question of service during the French and Indiana War, Jacob Comfort is recorded on the list of freeholders and inhabitants living in the Precinct of Mamacoting, Orange County, as having signed the Articles of Association, which was returned on 26 June 1775 to [the Continental] Congress by the President of the Committee [of Safety], John Young.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
