• Ancestor of compatriots John P. Lenes, Jeffrey Lenes, Jared Lenes and Zachary Powers

Private Augustine Comer was born in 1757 in Colonial Virginia. He enlisted in the American Forces -VA Bgde., (12th Regt., active betw. 1776-80) raised on Easter Monday in 1776 at Williamsburg, VA. He served in Capt. Langdon’s Co., Colonel Neville’s Bgde under General Scott and saw action in the Philadelphia Campaign (1777) at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown; and, later at Monmouth, Stoney Point and Charlestown, SC. Private Comer was discharged at Charlestown after completing his tour; however, before he could leave, he was captured by the British with most of his regt. on May 12, 1780. The 12th Regt. was formally disbanded on Jan 1, 1783. Comer was held as a prisoner for two weeks before making a successful escape. In the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution, after, separation he joined Gen Francis Marion’s Light Horse. He also served under Gen’ls Thos. Sumter and Nathanael Greene. His second discharge came about three weeks before the surrender of the British Army by Gen’l Cornwallis. He served four and one half years. Augustine Comer died on Jul 22, 1824 and he was buried at Cummins Cemetery – near Union [Monroe Co., (WV) Virginia].

His widow received his Service Pension #W 18945.
