Robert Colburn was born on 11 January 1753 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
He married Effie Wortman in 1772. Their known children include:
Sarah was born on 17 October 1781 and married Willetts Skinner.
Jonathan was born on 20 February 1784 and married Susan Skinner.
Elizabeth was born on 12 February 1786 and married Benjamin Coddington.
John was born in 1787 and married Elizabeth Skinner.
Abram was born on 23 December 1789 and married Eleanor Woodmansey.
Hannah was born on 14 March 1793 and married Jacob Zarley.
Sylvester was born on 1 February 1796 and married Sarah Tissue.
The records of the Adjutant General of New Jersey Military show that Robert Colburn enlisted as a Private in Captain Joseph Luce's Company, Western Battalion, Morris County, New Jersey Militia. He served under Lieutenant-Colonel John Starke, beginning in June 1776, and served every alternate month for four years. He was a Private in Captain Nathaniel Horton's Company, Wester Battalion, Morris County, New Jersey Militia. He also served as a Private in the New Jersey State Troops.
He was wounded at Amboy when he was with General George Washington's Troops at Trenton on 25 December 1777. He was awarded a military pension
The Patriot died on 16 May 1836 in Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
