Jonathan Cogswell was born on 9 May 1725 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, the son of William and Mary Cogswell.
He was married on 28 December 1748 in Ipswich to Mary Appleton. In the vital records of Ipswich, they are listed as Jonathan and Mary of Chebacco [now the town of Essex]. I’ve included any children of the right age range from that couple.
William was born on 26 August 1750 and married Jemima Haskell
Jonathan [Jr.] was born on 4 January 1754 and died on 10 January 1776 just nine days after reenlisting in the Company of Captain Abraham Dodge.
Elizabeth was born on 7 June 1756
Joseph was born on 1 December 1757 and married Abigail Cleaveland.
Benjamin (1) was born on 27 June 1759 and died on 30 April 1763.
Mary was born on 19 December 1760 and died on 22 August 1784.

Nathaniel was born on 17 May 1768.

Revolutionary War service has been attributed to Jonathan as a Sergeant in the 3rd Company of Captain David Low of the Regiment commanded by Colonel Jonathan Cogswell, Massachusetts Militia. This service was for an alarm on 30 April 1778. This suggests the Company was of Minutemen.
The Patriot died on 19 February 1812 at Ipswich and his wife in July 1813 and are buried at Old Essex Cemetery [aka Chebacco cemetery].

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
