Directions to Cemetery / Gravesite:
  • The cemetery is in a field, in back the of farm buildings, on what was known as Wilson Hill
  • The cemetery is approximately 70’ by 73’ and is enclosed by a stone wall. There are fifty-seven evident burials, with many stones broken or in otherwise poor condition.
  • The cemetery is located on private property; notice to the homeowner is requested when visiting

Jeremiah Cogswell was born on 7 December 1743 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, the son of Nathaniel and Judith (Badger) Cogswell.

During the Revolution on 29 August 1776 at Gilmanton, New Hampshire, his name is among those men of the town who signed the oath of association in support of independence. He was a Gilmanton Selectman during the years 1775, 1776, and 1779. He was a member of a Gilmanton committee in 1775, a member of the Committee of Safety in 1777-1778, and a Surveyor of Highways in 1783.

He was married on 12 June 1766 at Belmont, Belknap, New Hampshire, to Mehetable Clement.

  • Jeremy (1) was born on 8 March 1773 and died young.

The Patriot died on 20 April 1802 in Gilmanton, Strafford County, New Hampshire, and the Find-a-Grave memorial lists him being interred at Wilson Hill Cemetery, although they don’t list a source or stone.
