Author: Mark Andrew Davis

Peter COE was baptized on 21 January 1753 at Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey, the son of Benjamin and Rachel (Prudden) Coe.

He was married to Mary Shearer Allen on 22 August 1781. There are likely many other children than those listed below. However, these are the only ones that have been proven through SAR and DAR applications.

  • Benjamin was born on 8 June 1783 and married Susannah McKibben.
  • Sarah was born on 15 December 1784 and married Josiah Scott.

Peter made an application for a military pension on 13 November 1832 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He entered service in February 1776 for a one-year term in the Company of Captain Peter Dickerson, under the command of Colonel Dayton of the 2nd Regiment from Morris County, New Jersey. The Company marched from Amboy to Albany, New York by marching up the Mohawk River, then no to Johnstown. Much of the Regiment left from Johnstown to continue to a nearby Fort, but Peter’s Company stayed in Johnstown for about two months at the garrison. When the Regiment returned, the Army marched back to Albany and then to Ticonderoga for winter quarters under Colonel Wayne. He remained there until March 1777, when he was discharged and returned to Morris County after about a year of service.

Shortly afterward, the family moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In 1779 Peter volunteered for one month and marched under General Hand up the Big Beaver and attacked a group of Native Americans. Shortly after that, he again volunteered for one month and marched to the Allegheny River under Colonel James Smith, and returned home.

The Patriot died in October 1836 in Hanover Township, Beaver County [was Washington County until 1800], Pennsylvania; his burial place is unknown, but probably near Coe Station.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
