Author: Douglas Harold Nelson
James Stell Coberly (Cubberly) was born before 1731 in Burlington County, New Jersey and died before 24 March 1806 in Hardy County, Virginia. His wife Mary was born about 1745. James immigrated to Hampshire County, Virginia, by 3 November 1772 and died before 24 March 1806 when his widow made an indenture there.
There were twelve children in all. The identity of his wives is a mystery; however, his wife’s name always appears as Mary. His widow Mary married Valentine Powers Sr. on February 14, 1815 in Hardy County, Virginia. All but four of his children are proven by the SAR and DAR.
1. John, born before 1754.
2. Thomas, born October 28, 1755.
3. Mary, baptized September 30, 1761.
4. Hannah, born June 25, 1763.
5. Isaac, born before 1773.
6. Levi, born September 4, 1773.
7. William born about 1775.
8. James, born March 5, 1779.
9. Sarah, birthdate unknown.
10. George, born February 20, 1789.
11. Martin H., born about 1790.
12. Joseph, born about 1793.
The author of this biography descends through his daughter Hannah Coberly (1763-1834) who married John Dever Jr. on March 6, 1785 in Hampshire County, Virginia. James Coberly’s granddaughter Hannah Dever Guthery, wife of Lieutenant-Colonel John Guthery of Greene County Pennsylvania, identifies her grandfather James Stell Coberly as a surgeon who rendered medical aid to Continental Troops in the American Revolutionary War. Three of his descendants have independently maintained the same; however, no contemporary record of his career as a physician has been discovered.
His father James Cubberly, the patriarch of the Coberley family, was born about 1690, coming to America sometime before the year 1714. He married Mary Stell Pearson, daughter of Robert Pearson and Catherine (Katrin) Stell, in 1716 in New Jersey.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
