Author: David J. Perkins
Cornelius Clough was born 19 Jan 1755, the son of Benjamin and Mary (Sanborn) Clough. He died 22 Apr 1831 according to the Rev. War Pension application of his widow [RP-W15998], and corroborated by his gravestone in East Unity Cemetery. According to affidavits with the Pension application (by Samuel Stevens of Goshen and Matthias Bartlett of Unity) he married in Aug 1774, Mary Levit who stated she was the widow of Cornelius Clough in her application on 26 Jan 1837, aged 81 years. [Note: By another source they married at South Hampton on 16 Jan 1775] Mary died 11 Feb 1838, age 84 and is buried in the East Unity Cemetery. Cornelius was already in Cheshire Co. when he purchased land in Unity on 7 Jul 1788 [ChesDeed20:335]. Witnesses to the deed were Dorothy Clough and Elijah Frink. Their children were recorded at Kingston; they moved to Unity before the 1790 Census, and he appeared in Censuses there until his death.
Children of Cornelius Clough and Mary (Levit):
1. Dorothy born 13 Mar 1775, died 25 Apr 1855; she married Stephen Gilman.
2. Benjamin born 26 May 1777, probably died young.
3. Sarah born 22 Oct 1779, died 24 Oct 1875; she married Jeremiah Gilman
4. Benjamin born 2 Mar 1782 in Kingston NH, died in Unity NH on 29 Oct 1837.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
