Author: Kevin Lee Driesbach

Conrad Cline was born on 17 September 1757, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of Peter and Anna Barbara (Glasbrenner) Kline.

He married Nancy Ginders in 1780 and had ten known children:

  • Nancy was born in 1780 and married Nicholas Sidener.
  • Mary was born in December 1782 and married Alexander Berry.
  • Henry was born on 21 April 1785 and married Sussana Worling.
  • Elizabeth was born on 14 July 1787 and married John Defenbough.
  • Sarah was born in 1789 and married George Dorm.
  • Catherine was born on 1 December 1791 and married Henry Worline.
  • Barbara was born on 22 March 1794 and married Henry Fogler.
  • Susanna was born in July 1796 and married David Donaldson.
  • Abraham was born in 1797 and married Nancy Moore.
  • Margaret was born in 1799 and married Isaac Wheeler.

Conrad enlisted in 1776 as a Private in Captain Peter Grubb’s Company, Colonel Samuel Miles Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment. He re-enlisted in May 1778 and was with the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment under Colonel Josiah Harmar. He was discharged in July 1781. He was in the Pennsylvania Militia from 1781-1782. He participated in the Battle of Long Island, Monmouth, and was at Valley Forge.

Before the actual settlement of Saltcreek Township, most of the sections along Salt Creek were occupied by “squatters” who began to come to the area around 1797 or 1798. Conrad Kline was one of the earliest squatters settling on Plum Run. Later, he settled in a quarter of Section One on Moccasin Creek.

Conrad commenced a Military Pension on 26 March 1829 in Pickaway County. In his application, he stated that he was blind and that his wife was almost blind. He was taken in by his daughter Margaret Wheeler and her husband, who signed all his land to them.

The Patriot died in 1837 and was buried in the Marlborough Cemetery, Delaware County, Ohio. There is controversy over Conrad’s death and burial. Many say he died in Pickaway County; some say Delaware County. On 18 March 1837, Randolf W. Lawrence, attorney for Conrad Cline, signed for his last pension payment in Cincinnati. In the enabling document, executed in Delaware County, Ohio, it states, “… he now resides in the said county of Delaware, and has resided there for the space of less than one year past, and that previous thereto he resided in Pickaway County where he resided thirty years." One can only assume that after his wife Nancy’s death in 1835, he was spending his final days with his son, Reverend Henry Cline, in Delaware County.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
