Captain Benjamin Clement was a patriot in the American Revolution. His patriotic service is demonstrated by providing much needed gun powder for the American Army during the war. He also served as a Captain in the French and Indian War from Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Father: is William Clement Jr. Mother: Mary. Born: 1700 in King William County, Virginia. Married: Susana Hill in 1735 in King and King County Virginia Death: 1780 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
Captain Benjamin Clement is the fifth generation grandfather of Larry John Magerkurth President General of the NSSAR for the years 2011 & 2012. NSSAR Number 147965
He is the fourth generation grandfather of Charles Lucion Clements from Bartlesville, Oklahoma. NSSAR Number 182732
Captain Benjamin Clement wife Susana Hill Clement is a Patriot; she furnished supplies during the American Revolution. Mary Lee O Brien NSDAR Number 470797 Benjamin Clement was born in 1700 the son of William Clement in King County Virginia, where he married Susannah (Susana) Hill the daughter of Colonel Isaac Hill, of King and Queen County. This is found along with the account of Captain Benjamin Clement in pages 109 and 110 from Southern Lineages; Records of Thirteen Families; by A. Evans Wynn published in 1940.Benjamin Clement moved in 1748 to Pittsylvania County ( then Lunenburg County ). Benjamin Clement died in Pittsylvania County in 1780 and is buried at the foot of Clement Hill.

Chatham, Virginia. - Benjamin Clement son of William Clement of King William and Amelia, married Susanna, and it is family tradition that she was Susanna Hill, probably a daughter of Captain Isaac Hill of King and Queen County. They were married about 1725, for their son Isaac was born in 1727, according to the Register of his family Bible. -------When Halifax was made a county in 1752 Benjamin Clement, Gent. Was one of the Justices of the Peace appointed for the new county, and was appointed Captain of rangers in Halifax in 1755.”

With his neighbor, Charles Lynch, who lived across Stanton River in Campbell County, Benjamin Clement made the first gunpowder in the colony. The mill turned out fifty pounds of powder a day and was more than probably located on Sycamore Creek. An article by Charles Lynch published in the Virginia Gazette on August 11, 1775. In part states the following:
”Some time ago, my making (gun) powder was mentioned in your paper; but, as I with for no more merit (fnould there be any in this) than I deferve, I inform the publick, that Mr. Benjamin Clement is a partner with me in making the (gun) powder, and that he (Benjamin Clement) was the firft in the colony, I have heard of, who attempted to make it, although he did not bring it to perfection. Since our partnerfhip, we have brought it to fach perfection, we can make 50 lb. weight in a day.

Benjamin Clement died in 1780 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and his will lists son Benjamin Clement Jr. is to receive one part of the estate as found on page 110 of Southern Lineages. There are two Benjamin Clement entries found in the Clement Family Bible as shown on page 111 of Southern Lineages, Records of Thirteen Families.The first entry lists Benjamin Clements son, Benjamin Clement date of birth as 1735 and the second lists the sons marriage to his first wife Mary Baker.
Benjamin Clement contribution to establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of supplier of gunpowder to the Revolutionary Army extended beyond himself to his family. His wife and sons also assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of suppliers and soldiers.
Wife Susanna Hill Clement furnished supplies for public use during the American Revolution Public Service Claim No. 85, Pittsylvania County, Va. (Reference Mary Lee O”Brien NSDAR # 470797.
