Augustine  "Austin" was born on 4 March 1755 in South Carolina. He married Catherine Smith in 1782. Together they had twelve children, all of whom lived to adulthood. The family resided in Spartanburg, South Carolina, until about 1805. It was then that they migrated to Warren County, in Western Kentucky. Here he resided until his death in 1834.

Austin Clayton served in the South Carolina Militia as a Private in a Light Horse Company and as a scout on and off from 1775 to 1782. He was engaged in many battles against the Tories, including the Second Siege of Augusta, Georgia. He also participated in the Cherokee Wars in 1776.

His occupation was that of a farmer and preacher. He is recorded as the first pastor of the Glasgow Baptist Church in Warren County, Kentucky.
According to his statement during his pension hearing, Austin participated in many battles throughout the entire war, mostly in South Carolina, where the battles were numerous and very fierce. He served under many officers during this time. While serving under Colonel John Thomas and Captain John Gowan, he was in campaigns against the Tories (led by Colonel Thomas Fletchall), the Snow Campaign, and the Cherokee Indian Wars.

In early 1780, while serving under Colonel John Thomas and Captain W. Smith, his company, was pursuing some Tories but halted the pursuit when it was discovered that they were outmanned. He states that he pursued or engaged with Captain Gray’s Company of Tories, as well as Captain Holley’s Company of Tories. He was also present at the Second Siege of Augusta in 1781.

He was honorably discharged on New Year’s Day in 1783. Austin stated that his home was burned down shortly thereafter (allegedly by some outlying Tories), and all of his discharge papers were lost.

Augustine Clayton was born in Chester County, South Carolina, on 14 March 1755. He married Catharine Smith, and they had six children. He moved his family to Warren County, Kentucky, where he died on 6 September 1834.

At age 20, while residing on the Big Catawba River in Chester County, South Carolina, Augustine Clayton enlisted in late 1775 into the Militia. The Company of Light Horse was commanded by Colonel John Thomas. Augustine reported directly to Captain John Gowan. Augustine’s brother, John, was a Lieutenant in this company.

In 1776 he served against the Native American troops. After being slightly wounded, he was discharged during the winter of 1776. He served at various times under Captain Gowan until 1780. He moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, in 1776. In 1780, he enlisted under Captain William Smith and was captured by Tories, but released. In 1781, he served under Captain Benedict Middleton and General Clarke and was at the Siege of Augusta. His last service was again under Captain Gowan, late in 1782 and early 1783. In all, he was captured four times.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
