Author: William Henry Robbins
Jonathan Chamberlain Sr., the son of Samuel Chamberlain and Abigail Hill, was born February 11, 1711 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Cram, the daughter of John Cram and Sarah Holt, about 1740 in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. She was born June 27, 1720 in Andover, Massachusetts.
Children were Molly, Abigail, John, Sarah, Alive, Samuel, Jonathan and Elizabeth.
On 12 May, 1737, Jonathan's father deeded him, "for love and natural affections," two lots (#5 & 12) at Tyng's Township (now Pembroke), New Hampshire, possibly in preparation for marriage (Jonathan was about 25 years old at the time). The lots were located north of Colonel Dudley's farm at Tyng's Township, "which are on the east side of Merrimac River between Suncook or Lovell's Town and Litchfield." On 21 August, 1739, Jonathan sold this property, or at least part of it, to James Anderson of Londonderry, New Hampshire, and removed to Salem-Canada (now Lyndeborough), New Hampshire.
Jonathan remained in Lyndeborough for the rest of his life. His wife's father, John Cram had already settled there in about 1737 or 8. In fact, the Crams are considered the first residents of Lyndeborough. Johnathan had evidently cared for, and decently buried Joseph Cram, the brother of his wife, and when Joseph died, Jonathan was given 75 acres (the south part of lot No. 41), on April 8, 1768, by the heirs of Joseph Cram. Jonathan Chamberlain was a prominent settler of that town.
Jonathan served in the Militia during the Revolutionary War with his son, also named Jonathan. They marched with Captain Peter Clark's Company from Lyndeborough to Ticonderoga on July.1, 1777 and returned after Burgoyne's engagement at Hubbardston on July 6, 1777, for a total of 86 miles traveled.
He died January 19, 1795 and she died April 30, 1806 in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
